22nd of April 2025

from a coffee shop, Scottish Highlands

Dear you,

As promised in last month’s letter, I’m writing this one from a café. It’s just turned 9.20AM and I’ve come to my local Costa coffee. I’ve swerved the Easter rush, so it is relatively quiet, with only a few tables being occupied. I’ve chosen one tucked away in the corner, meaning that I can people watch in between writing to you. This is something I’m doing more often, especially when I have my journal with me as I find describing people as if they are characters in a story really helps fuel my creativity.

I can’t help asking questions. Like, when did the lady sitting two tables across get her ankle tattoo? And what do the roses signify? What is the older lady tapping at on her tablet? If it’s a message, it looks like a long one. And is the man wearing sunglasses inside hungover, or does he just want them on show. They look expensive, so I think it may be the latter.
