Gorgeous writing! I felt as if I was transported there marveling in that glorious nature with you. I love googling the animals and flowers you mention in your pieces. It’s a delight to learn about the many different creatures and plants in the world!
Thank you for taking me along your hike. I find my mind instantly clears when I’m moving in the wild. I’d never heard of blaeberries. At first I thought you misspelled blueberries. 😜 It is fascinating to imagine your beautiful home.
What a stunning photograph! I loved reading about your climb and recognise the sensations you described - the only time I have those is when I'm immersed in nature. They're unique aren't they and so rejuvenating. It seems to have jumped straight into summer on certain days down here in Cornwall too! Other days it's warm but rainy and my garden, which is full of trees and shrubs just mushrooms. I can't keep on top of it :) but love the wildness of it at the same time.
For someone on the other side of the world currently sliding into winter, I enjoyed these moments in the Scottish sun amidst the blaeberries and cuckoo song. Thank you ✨
Beautifully written Molly, I felt I was there! How special to hear the Cuckoo a much loved bird. I noticed that some of the geese haven't migrated! it must have been that rainy cold April that perhaps changed their mind! Thank you!
It's great, I'm reading it as research for my climate fiction book. Last year I also did lots of research on reforesting after the last ice age. The northern treeline will play a more important role in a world with a changing climate than other forests like the Amazon rainforest.
You are correct the last cuckoo I heard in the Midlands, even in the more remote (for England) Lincolnshire was about 10 years ago. But the Buzzards are back in numbers. Could the two be connected??
I'm not totally convinced. I think that there may be other reasons but ar'n't knowledgable enough to know what. Whilst much of North and Central England has changed we still are fortunate enough to have large natural areas and many common birds to provide nest sites. Still perhaps a discussion with another forum. Anyway you got me interested as most of your articles do, keep it up.
You write wonderfully. I cannot begin to say how envious I am of you! Instead of stress filled school mornings in the middle of a dank housing estate in central Scotland, what I would t give to have peace and be in the middle of nature. You are so lucky, and I am lucky to have found your writing to transport me away every Monday morning.
Wow,that’s was a gorgeous description.I could really visualise everything! Thank you for such an interesting and evocative treat.
Thank you Rachel, I'm so glad you enjoyed!

Thank you Caroline! :)
Such a beautiful post. I’m currently reading The Treeline by Ben Rawlence and I’m at the chapter about the pine forests in the Scottish Highlands.
Thank you! That sounds like a great book :)

Beautiful. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you :)
Lovely! (I also kind of want a picture of blaeberries, I’m not familiar!) 😂

Perhaps, although I think one of the main pressures on cuckoos is changing habitat.
