I'd really recommend Stephen King's 'On Writing', it's a brilliant book that doesn't overcomplicate what it means it write well. And he has some great tips on reading as well. It's a book that has stayed with me.

I really enjoyed this. I feel vindicated in the plethora of notebooks I own. And I was looking at precisely those two nature memoir courses. You’ve saved me both time and money, Molly. Thank you!

That’s so helpful - thank you! I want to write essays as opposed to snippets, but don’t know where to start with topics.. I am thinking to follow through on your Skillshare recommendations …

These are fantastic resources, thanks for sharing. I already requested “Reading Like a Writer” from my local library because I have thought about why it is so hard to do that!

Thank you for sharing this. There are some great resources listed. I am considering treating myself to the FSC writing course for my birthday (October). May have just done click and collect (Waterstones) on a couple of the books too. 😊

Hope you had a good weekend, and this week is kind to you.

Thank you. It looks good from the description. And it would be good to have something to give myself a boost. I have a book called Writing Wild by Tina Welling that I am planning to dive into at the start of February. 😊

It caught my eye in a charity shop (looks brand new), so I decided to give it a go. I'm currently working through Kokoro by Beth Kempston in my journalling time but Writing Wild is next on my list. 😊

Great tips - thank you Molly. I keep turning to notion and trying to grapple along with it but I think I just confuse myself with all the templates I down load abd try to use/ maybe I should work out how to wipe it clean and start again!

Yes, it can be tricky! Another resource I didn't share actually is Ali Abadaal's 'Notion Masterclass' on Skillshare. This really helped me when I was just starting out and perfect for beginners :)

Thank you - @Molly! I must apply myself to learning properly how to utilize Notion. I have terrible tendency to try and wing it.

Hello Molly, thanks for these great resources. I am Dutch-speaking, but try to write my observations here on Substack in English. Which nature-writing course do you think would be helpful for me? Did you enjoy both courses you mentioned, and were they helpful for your writing? Eventually, do you have an example of how a lesson looks?

Regards,

Ivan

I did enjoy both classes. The ones from Cambridge was great in giving a good foundation in nature writing whereas the FSC one had more of a focus on nature memoir writing (so a bit more niche). Both used a combination of online slides/pre-recorded video lectures and then virtual live sessions to discuss certain topics further and get feedback. Hope that helps :)

I would recommend Making a Literary Life by Carolyn See. To be honest, I haven't read it in years, but it was the first kind of writing guide that made me think "Okay, I see what this is for."

Have you listened to the podcast “How I Write?” by David Perell? I find it very interesting. It’s nice to hear about the different writing practices people have.
