It’s lovely to hear these recommendations. I have only just returned to classics after struggling with them in my teens and now I adore them. Wuthering Heights and Jayne Ayre in particular. But also ‘I Capture the Castle’ and ‘O the Brave Music’ have brought on a love of classic memoir style too. Looking back I seem to have all sorts of different tastes from sci-fi (The Three Body Problem is incredible) right the way through to nature memoirs and classics. Autumn and winter are a time for fiction for me 😃
I loved this post Molly - it definitely made me think about which books have shaped my life which is such an interesting way to look things. The Salt Path is such a winner - the bit where the ladybirds surround them is my favourite! From your recommendations I have put The Little Shop of Happily Ever After on my list - I love the idea of a book truck in the Scottish Highlands! I don't know if you follow Ariel Bissett on YouTube? She's great (and funny!) - she lives in Canada, loves books and has built a book truck called Bissett Books, I think you might like her : ) https://youtu.be/iOmUaX1GR4A?si=CXrQGu7fJ1aZLhmG
I have read a lot of these books too Molly. I only keep books on my bookshelf that I know I love and will read again. Sitting there is The Little Shop of Happy Ever After! Read the follow up too (but before!). Midnight Library was very good and Jane Eyre. I lent The Salt Path to a friend and never got it back, what a story though! I loved Little House on the Prairie growing up but had only read the first one, so as an adult I read the others. Never too old for a children's book!!
What a great list! I have loved Anne of Green Gables since I was a kid. I re-read the whole series in the first year of the pandemic and it was such a comfort. I'm also planning to re-read Wuthering Heights in November! I've only read it once before and that was about 15 years ago when I was a teenager so I'm interested to see what I think of it as an adult!
I am enthralled with classic literature. Jane Eyre and Rebecca are big favorites, and the Classic and Antique section of our local used book store chain is my favorite spot to hunt for something else to add to my old books library. Love this list!
this is such a unique way to share books! I loved it! and I'm running to add the salt path to my tbr. if it's anything like autobiography by margiad evans I'll be jumping for joy
I love seeing the books that shape people; this was a delight! If you liked Alderton's memoir then you might like her fiction, particularly Good Material, her most recent book, really had me laughing my pants off which is hard to do through a book.
This is a great idea for a post Molly. It’s made me reflect and think what books made me me also. I’d have to include Wuthering Heights in that too - a wonderful book that was omnipresent through much of my teenage years.
the salt path by raynor winn is truly one of a kind. she takes you right along with her, every step of the way. thanks for sharing all of these, molly.
Hi Molly, what a great idea for a post and it's lovely to read how these books have influenced your life. I just pre-ordered a book that maybe won't change your life but as a planner and a book lover you might like it. It's The Book Lovers Journal 2025, created by Freya North. I've just ordered it for myself for Christmas. Lots of love, Heather x https://thebookloversjournal.com/

I love to read a variety too and always keen to try and push myself out of my comfort zone! :)
