I love your wholehearted approach, Molly. It’s a comfort and joy to me at 57. And as a mum to 3 daughters, I applaud your independent spirit. It’s wonderful to see and inspiring to follow. 💗
Hello Molly 💗 I love your content, both YouTube and substack!
What I like about your attitude in being a content creator is that you are constant in your work. In the past I used to pay a few subscriptions of YouTubers I liked but when I went to follow them on Patreon for example I found that it was more like sustaining them without actually having a real addition to their content that justified the subscription. Nothing wrong with sustain someone you really like, but if I pay a subscription I expect to have something more in return. And I believe you have found the right balance here and I appreciate it, and i'll continue being a subscriber to your substack! 🌈
Yes to all of this. It's so easy to fall into the trap of creating for the algorithmn or for a mythical 'ideal customer'. But when you create content you love and that lights you up - that's what people really resonate with.
Your YouTube channel is my No.1 favourite above anything else, so too is your substack. I really connect with your way of life and your values. Everything feels realistic and honest. I love the slow life (so much in fact that I'm yet to write my first post on here) and I love your book reviews, baking and nature walks. I'm so glad you are continuing on your journey, especially as you have your new project (no spoilers for those who haven't seen the video!) Thank you for all your hard work, it brings me such joy. Take care of yourself. XX
Hi there, your hard work is so worth it to us. You’re very talented otherwise you wouldn’t be where you are. Creative work was always going your way be a different world to the scientific. Try and sit back and enjoy
Morning Molly, what a fantastic insight to what indeed does seem to be a career choice not for the faint hearted! So interesting to know it’s not as easy as it appears on screen (is anything?) but so happy that you’re still doing what you love because we love it too! I often toy with the idea of YouTube (I’ve uploaded a few nature based videos in the past) but you’re right in that it requires a commitment I’m not sure I’m ready to give at the moment but one day, who knows. Have a lovely week 🙂xx
As I am finding my way into new realms and considering content creation at 53 years old, you help provide a direction and North Star. I appreciate your honesty, your commitment to your values and community-centered approach. Thank you and keep doing you.
Hello Molly, many thanks for this post! Your intake on content creating is so interesting to read and relatable ! Congrats for the journey and the choices you made along the way.
I recognise myself in parts of your story. I’ve just gone part time at my job in order to pursue a career as an illustrator with a little online shop. I’m currently trying to transition and move most of my creative work from instagram to substack to be able to share a longer and slower content. It only has been a couple of months, but I already love what I’m slowly creating on here. And it has released some of the pressure I put on myself on instagram. I can’t leave yet but I deal with it at my own pace. Small steps 🙂
Another piece of writing which I absolutely love !
I so love a nuanced opinion especially on creative career which tend to be glamorized or glossed over. Everything path has its darker sides, and it is really refreshing to see your honesty about your career and how you stand up for your values and yourself.
It makes your work even more valuable to me and my respect for what you do even stronger.
Really admire you for sticking to your values. I can imagine that's not easy as a content creator on YouTube. I fully agree with your decision to concentrate on the longer form video content - I personally find the shorts vapid and annoying. You seem to have found a really good balance with your content
It’s so lovely to read your thoughts & experience in what can become a ‘dog eat dog’ world. The vagaries of online culture still baffles me on the daily (which may be very much the reason why I am hesitant to lurk around too much)
I am so glad you are doing things in a way that is nourishing for you & they we get to receive your creativity here 🧡
I absolutely agree, protecting your creativity and creating content you actually enjoy creating is so important. I have fallen into the trap of creating for the algorithm before and it never feels good.
I wanted to share this with you because when I saw it a few minutes ago on Thriftbooks, I thought immediately of you and this post (I'd read the post a few hours ago. It seemed right up your alley. I thought it might encourage you.
