Books have immense power.

As an avid reader for most of my life, I’ve experienced all sorts of emotions. I’ve laughed until my belly hurt, cried until my eyes were red raw, hugged a book tight enough to imprint it on my heart and even thrown the odd unfortunate volume in rage.

You never quite know what you are getting with a book. Some stories you will forget almost instantly whereas others you will carry with you forever.

Despite the fact that I’ve consumed hundreds of stories, books still have the capacity to surprise me.

Today, I’ve picked the 14 most surprising books I’ve read. This includes some critically acclaimed books that I (surprisingly!) don’t feel live up to the hype, some serendipitous titles I’ve just adored, stories with unusual characters or unexpected romances and, of course, the books with gasp-worthy twists that still have me reeling!

This post, like lots of my book chat, is just for my wonderful members. If you would like to join our wonderful community, you can subscribe below to also watch my video about how to get more from reading and all my seasonal book reviews, starting with my winter video here.

We’d really love to have you.

That being said, lets get into the books. Be prepared for some widely unpopular opinions…

P.S., this post will be spoiler free, don’t worry!
