Unlike many of my peers, the idea of turning 30 didn’t fill me with horror. In fact, I welcomed it.
Although research suggests that our 20’s are one of the happiest periods of our life, this has not been my experience.
Like many of us, my 20’s were full on and I felt like I spent most of my time scrambling around, desperately trying to figure out how to be an adult.
Don’t get me wrong, there was a lot of good stuff too. I met my current partner in my mid-20’s, made some life-long friends, moved to the Scottish Highlands and had some wonderful (if slightly bizarre) experiences in my role of a wildlife conservationist (waking up to a puffin in your bedroom is just one example).
Yet, in all honesty, my 20’s didn’t feel very ‘me’. Wild nights out quickly became old. The pressure of climbing the career ladder felt outdated and unfulfilling. Dating was exhausting and meant I spent most of my time feeling fat and/or ugly. And my finances were always a bit of a farce.
I’m now 32 and, so far at least, I’m loving this decade. I feel grounded and steady in the life I have built and, unlike what society may want you to believe, there are so many upsides to aging.
So, I thought it was about time I celebrated a few of them…
(Caveat - this is just my experience as someone who is self-employed, intentionally childless and in a long-term relationship, so undoubtedly my experience will be very different to others in the same era!)
What I love about my 30’s
Early nights in are now the norm
Feeling confident to rock a shorter haircut
Getting cuddles with my friend’s children, but being able to give them back
No more dating apps
I’m kinder to my body
I’m confident to drive pretty much anywhere (and even parking has improved)
I have a job that makes me feel both secure and energised
I can afford better quality items
Sitting in silence is no longer weird or awkward
Finally finding an exercise regime I enjoy
I can live an experience without feeling the need to share it online
I have a wardrobe that matches my lifestyle
I’m able to organise my life around my menstrual cycle
Re-finding my inner child with fantastical stories & creative hobbies
Having so much shared history with friends
Caring less what people think
My cute wrinkles from past smiles
That I know longer listen to Radio 1
How excited I get for a new season of Bake Off
I no longer cover up my skin with make up
Knowing that I can do hard things
Nailing a highly efficient cleaning routine
I both know and like the person I am now and feel excited about what the next few years will bring…
Until next time,
Molly xx
