I totally understand where you’re coming from. We have ‘horizontal’ rain on the Isle of Man, because it’s nearly always windy. It’s well worth the extra 5 minutes to be correctly dressed and booted before going out. I find hot sunny weather gives me anxiety; maybe because I feel pressurised to be out ‘enjoying’ it? Only downside to wet weather is wet, muddy dogs 😅
I’ve never particularly liked being out in the rain but, after reading this, I might be willing to try and embrace wetter days outdoors. I think, as you say, the right clothing can make all the difference!
You’ve done a great PR job for rainy weather, Molly! 😊
Rain will never stop me getting out and about in Dumfries and Galloway - sometimes made even more unbelievably beautiful by vibrant rainbows and by vivid colour combinations such as drenched emerald fields with a backdrop of coal-black skies. Recently a never-to-be-forgotten rain experience involved swimming in a darkening loch just as the rain started;: each droplet hitting the water looked from my angle as though it was exploding up off the surface - gravity-defying and mesmerising.
I love how youve described how the land 'has softened and blended like watercolours' because of torrential rain, brings beauty to the sogginess! And the rainy day activities are so good too - I must admit that I prefer to be inside reading and doing some crochet on a rainy day, I find the sound of rain in the windows so soothing.
This made me snort out loud! The Anne Shirley and Jane Austen references! I can just see the bit in the film where Elizabeth Bennet is soaking wet! I try to embrace the rainy days and remember many days wearing waterproofs to walk the dog! Problem is the current dog hates the rain!! I shall endeavour to get out in the rain this week, as I think we are all in for a lot of it!!
I’m with you on the hot weather. I do not cope well in heat & bright sunny days. Quite weird as I live in one of the most sunniest countries in the world. I much prefer the cold months & rainy days. I’m not a great fan though of rainy days in summer🥵 way to muggy & the nasty beasties that are out. I’ve often thought of moving to one of the islands off the top end of Scotland. Somewhere nice & cold🥰
Living in the Pacific Northwest, of the USA, Olympia, Washington to be specidfic, I also encounter a lot of rainy and overcast days. So I can relate! I embrace it by making sure I get out for a walk every day no matter what. Then I spend cozy time indoors doing some of my favorite things like baking, quilting, and reading.
Even reading this feels cozy. I love rainy days for coziness. I'm forced to go outside and walk with my dog but when I come back in, the dreariness is almost like a free pass to snuggle in with a good book or start writing something.
Rain serves as a quiet reminder to make time to take care of yourself. Drink tea, read a book, curl up for a nap. To do things that only rain can encourage.
Am I the only one with the Twilight Saga soundtrack for the cold, dark seasons? #NoShame Haha! I feel extra excited for the dreary weathered holidays thanks to your post! 😍 I loooove Anne of Green Gables. Have you seen the Netflix adaptation "Anne with an E"?
Oh I love this and I love the rain. As a family we holiday a lot in the Lake District, in fact we are here right now. And as a family of pluviophiles there's nothing better.
The Scottish Highlands is perfect in the rain. I always stay away from trips there in the summer - one because it's always so busy if you think of Glencoe, the other because harsh sunlight just brightens the mountains and washes everything out. I'm so at peace when I visit the highlands on a rainy dull day, it's just gorgeous. I love that you're now one of us here in Scotland, using the word dreich to describe the rain and embracing it!
I'm the same and assume it's literally in my blood ... mostly Scottish DNA. I live in a very hot and humid climate, and the older I get, the more difficult the summers become. I've asked my youngest son the buy me a small summer home or flat in Scotland so I can start spending summers there. I've always loved rain. Once we l8ved in a place where it rained pretty much every day from October to July, and it was my favorite place we've lived so far.
What I do on a rainy day depends on the temperature. I like to enjoy hiking if it's not too cold. If it's really cold, I stay inside to bake, cook, read, work a puzzle, or do a crafty thing. Recently I created my first watercolor painting and would like to do more. I usually have a crochet project going, too.
A goof friend recently found me several high quality classical music albums / vinyl and that's been a nice addition to slow, quiet days.
I, myself, love fall and early winter. The air turns crisp, and I can breathe. Any time it is below 40 degrees Fahrenheit/4c, it's wonderful. If it's rainy or snowing, even better.

Yes wet doggies can be a bit of a challenge! 😊

Aw I'm glad! :)
Right? This post has me ready to go out into the rain, and then come back in to my warm drink pantry

Oh it is the best sound! :)

Haha I'm glad you enjoyed! Hopefully you can persuade your doggy out! :)

Yes I agree summer rain is less pleasant!
Lovely post and images. Scotland is on my list of travel spots in the next year or so. The longing to go, deepens reading this!

That all sounds lovely! :)

I agree as I'm always looking for an excuse to read! :)

Nope I've definitely listened to that! I've watched the first couple of seasons but need to catch up :)
Love Twilight music and a big fan of the films.
Oh ME TOO. It's that time of year again :')

I hope you enjoy! The Lake District is on my list to visit :)

I so agree! I feel like I have my Scotland back when the autumn comes around :)

These sound like some wonderful activities! :)

Agreed! :)
Loved reading it, and I don't mind walking in the rain with my red rain coat on😊. I love a cup of warm turmeric latte for cold rainy, windy days
Oh sounds lovely! :)
