ππ»ππ»ππ» you go Molly!! Isnβt it interesting that most influencers are women and therefore itβs is immediately trivialised. But influencing is as you point out, a natural human phenomena, and some humans are better at it than others. I wonder whether the fact that women are more successful at it itβs because it really plays to skills that many women have which is all about reading the room, pitching things appropriately, a way of being diplomatic and persuasive at the same time?
When I saw the word influencer, my mind went to those people hyping fashion and beauty products for personal gain, which is a turnoff for me (maybe because of my age?). Your post helped me see influencers in a broader sense, and you are one I would like to be influenced by, having created a life that is healthier and acting as a guide to help other people be their best selves.
Perhaps there is a negative connotation to the word influencer that implies someone is actively moving someone into new behaviors, in devious manipulative or self-serving way. If people are influencing someone to be healthier and a better person, maybe that person is actually a guide or a role model, someone whose goodness motivates people to live a better life.
Molly!! Thank-you- this was an incredible read for me. I often find myself thinking I have to over explain how things happen for me as an entrepreneur and slow lived business owner. Like Iβm lucky or something? Yes Iβm incredible happy and privileged to be educated and able to shift and learn new skills but thereβs no luck in it, magic yes luck no! Cx β¨
Thereβs reams to be written about the intersection between contempt and disregard for the job of being an influencer, and misogyny. Thank you for highlighting this, Molly. I have a close connection who works partially as an influencer, and I have seen the immense behind-the-scenes work that goes into creating the perfect sponsored Instagram post. It is not to be sneered at!
These are really good points that deserved to be widely acknowledged - I'm a freelance writer and editor, and I've been really impressed by the influencers I've come into contact with. I'm floored by how hard they work. They are true renaissance creatives with an enormous range of skills and experience. Usually, they started creating their content totally for free (that is, they paid the opportunity cost in time) and built their platforms from the ground up.
