The idea popped into my head of its own accord when I was washing the dishes (like many of my best ideas do).
I decided I wanted to understand happiness.
Specifically, I wanted to understand happiness in my own life. To learn to pay attention to those moments that make me smile. Whether they are great or small.
The exercise was simple. I decided to write down everything that brought joy in an average week.
I didn’t execute this perfectly as some days I wrote lots and other’s I forgot entirely, but the essence of what I was trying to achieve was captured.
So, in no particular order, these are the simple things that made me happy….
What made me happy in a very ordinary week…
Digging into a new jar of marmite
Gloomy days
A new video from a favourite YouTuber
Cooking for loved ones
Rain on a metal roof
Mist/fog
Buying books for others
Changing my desktop background to an autumn theme
Anything with cinnamon
Getting a math’s question right
Kind messages from friends
Rabbits
Gothic tales with twisted characters
Organic hot chocolate
My partner’s laugh
Cosy fantasy book covers
Packing groceries in jute shopping bags
Sunday morning. Or any morning
Homemade granola
Mushrooms of any kind
Starting a new book on a Monday
Writing/reading in cafes
Puppy cuddles (that smell!)
Flannel shirts
Scrapbooking on rainy days
Teapots
Charity shops
Checking off my Notion to-do list
Sad girl autumn playlists
Rustle of birch leaves
Bookmarks
Sitting next to a river
Planning van trips
Walks with Skye
Hanging laundry outside
Taylor swift lyrics
Frost
The smell of toast
A morning tea/coffee
Adding the finishing touches to a video
Chunky socks
Reading outside with a blanket
Pigeons
Nostalgic Hugh Grant films (Notting Hill, Bridget Jones, Four weddings etc…)
Hot water bottles
Porridge
Making the barista smile (by complimenting her nails)
Muddy trails
The soft scratch of pencil on paper
A freshly cleaned car (a rare occurrence)
Book themed candles
Autumn sunlight
I recorded 52 moments of joy in total. And I know that’s barely scratched the surface.
As predicted, it is the small, often overlooked, ordinary moments that really make me happy. And it turns out, my life is overflowing with them.
What would your list look like?
Until next week,
Molly xx
Oh I adore this!! I believe these fall under the “glimmers” category, as in they are small moments in a day that bring complete joy. They’re everywhere, it’s just about noticing them. Love your list and I most definitely will make the effort to make my own over the coming days. Have a wonderful week Molly :)
This is such a fabulous idea. I loved reading your list and many resonate with me. I think I might try and do the same - I know I will find, like you, it's the simple small joys within an ordinary week that will be on my list too x
